{"id":2863,"date":"2008-10-19T14:33:59","date_gmt":"2008-10-19T21:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-aboutdisabilities.pantheonsite.io\/?p=2863"},"modified":"2008-10-19T14:33:59","modified_gmt":"2008-10-19T21:33:59","slug":"statuesthat-reminds-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aboutdisability.com\/?p=2863","title":{"rendered":"Statues\u2026That Reminds Me"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From what I can tell from this side of the pond, there was a huge hue and cry when it was announced in 2005 that a sculpture of a naked, pregnant, disabled woman would be on display in Trafalgar Square for 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsmypulp.files.wordpress.com\/2006\/12\/alison-lapper.jpg?w=495\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ouch\/images\/news\/btn\/lapper_trafalgar\/main.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"Alison Lapper Pregnant in Trafalgar Square, 2005\" title=\"Alison Lapper Pregnant\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t imagine a statue like this in a public space in the US. Any aspect of the sculpture would doom it to remaining under covers: naked, pregnant, or disabled. Although sharing the square with <em>Alison <\/em>is Lord Nelson and his missing leg. I think it\u2019s OK to have a disabled war hero who appears pretty much able-bodied on public display just about anywhere.<br>The piece really tickles me. It\u2019s rounded form echoes Henry Moore\u2019s soft curves in hard marble. It\u2019s brazen in its nakedness and pregnancy. And, more than anything the statue depicts an obviously disabled person. The head is lifted high without the shame and fear so many of us hold inside ourselves. And, it\u2019s an attractive, effective work of art. What more can one ask except that it would be in the US?<br>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_qn4158\/is_20071224\/ai_n21173125?tag=content;col1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BNET <\/a>the sculpture was bought by BBC\u2019s chair and might go on world tour at the end of 2008. (They had better hurry, 2008 is almost over.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[The image above appears in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ouch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ouch\u2026it\u2019s a disability thing<\/a><\/em><em>, <\/em>an online newsletter published by the BBC.
