Now we’re cooking…

Accessible cornbread

Sometimes I get struck. I compulsively want to create something I’ve imagined.
It happened yesterday. A friend was having a party. The invitation said it was a potluck. Down the winding, curvy road of cooking mania lead me to Bittman’s How to Cook Everything and his recipe for cornbread. A major plus was his recommendation to use white beans! When Lyndi left for her women’s group annual, weekend getaway she told me to try to use the beans before they spoiled. Aha—Bittman’s cornbread.
Attending the party would be a number of people from the Bay Area disability community. Thinking about the attendees must have been what sparked my brainstorm. Actually, I don’t remember when it hit. I just know I frantically made a stencil from a downloaded image of the universal accessibility symbol, sprayed the paper stencil with Pam, placed it on the uncooked cornmeal, and sprinkled on paprika. Voilà! Other than the tear from leveraging the cornbread from the skillet I had an ephemeral piece of disability culture.
I got high marks for taste, the cumin helped. But, I think I can do better.
