I was hanging out in the bar with a bunch of folks at SDS last June. One of the party innocently asked, “What do you guys think about the new access symbol business?” Even dead sober I couldn’t help but go on a rant. I knew I had been thinking about how I didn’t like the new active symbol, but I was surprised at my vehemence. The short version is, I think it distracts the disability community from more important activism, and it seeks to personalize the symbol excluding all but the active, paraplegic, manual wheelchair users.
Well, I finally put my thoughts on paper for New Mobility magazine. If you’re interested you can see it at “New Accessibility Symbol is Frivolous”
